Low Light Aquarium Plants

low-light-aquarium-plantsIf you are setting up an aquarium and desire good-looking greenery, low light aquarium plants are an excellent way to brighten up your fish tank and provide a natural environment for your fish. If you are beginner, you probably want to acquire aquarium plants that take as little maintenance as possible. Also, you probably do not have a fancy lighting system that is required for specific varieties of natural plants, so you will want to seek out species that are able to grow in a darker environment. Fortunately, there are plenty of low light aquarium plants that will grow well in most freshwater aquariums.

Java Fern

Easy to care for and a mid-ground grower, Java Fern requires low to moderate lighting. Water conditions for this plant are best when kept at 68 to 82°F. The Java Fern is green in color and grows to a maximum size of around 8 inches tall. It is a beautiful, creeping aquarium piece that looks great planted singly or propagated in groups. Many aquarium enthusiasts will use this natural decor in tanks that contain cichlids or other large fish from South America.

Flame Moss

Another beautiful plant that requires little light to grow well is Flame Moss. Its growth rate is slow, and it can be propagated by cutting and planting in other portions of your aquascape. Unlike other mosses, Flame Moss does not grow out. Instead, the plant will gradually get taller. This aquatic plant gets its name from how it grows--the front of the plant slightly twists as the greenery grows higher and forms an image that resembles the flame on a candle. Here's a video that discusses how to plant and care for this wonderful specimen.

Anubias nana - Dwarf Anubias

One of the most hardiest of plants, dwarf anubias can grow in the harshest of environments. It is not super fussy about water conditions and is a hardy grower--even in conditions that have little light. However, while this plant is hardy, it takes time to grow tall. It will sprout new leaves every other week, and it can be propagated to other parts of your aquarium by cutting the plant at its rhizome and placing it in your gravel or sand base. You can expect a total height for this low light aquarium plant at around 3 to 5 inches. It's a nice plant to place in the foreground of your tank.
